Is technology hurting or helping us?

The Definition of technology is: The application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes especially in industry.

I think there are many pros and cons to technology being used in today’s world, it has made strides in the medical field it and has absolutely helped researchers scientists doctors and even ordinary people in a Great way. there’s so many more opportunities because of technology that help disabled people achieve things they could not have done 20 years ago. The list of pros goes on but do they outweigh the list of cons?

Now believe me when I say not everyone will agree with me or you but my opinion are that the cons are far worse than the pros. Do children even know how to speak to one another anymore? Do they ride their bikes do they jump on the trampoline do they play kick the can do they play tag did they play hide and seek? Do they go visit their grandparents just to say hello?

On most of these questions for most kids not all the answer is no they do not. Kids are so consumed with electron it devices they are forgetting to connect with nature and with people. They are growing up with the lack of communication skills and a lack of life skills. And on an even bigger note I do not think it’s OK to genetically alter a fetus. I am a firm believer in the Lord and his work, I think he has a book for each of us already written and what he has wrote should be.

So there is my take on technology and how it has affected us today.

  1. I really like your ideas on technology. They are so much like my feelings toward technology myself. When I watched the videos about the older generation and then the younger generation it broke my heart. I believe that children are losing out of important life skills because they are always on their devices. I remember as kid I was so fortunate because I use to help cook dinner and bake goods. I would also help outside and in the summer time I would help in the garden. I have gained so many life skills from this. My worry is that with the raise in technology that so many kids are losing out on these skills. I do agree that there are some good things it brings, but like you I believe the bad things out weight the good.

  2. I love how you put the definition of technology, no one else did that. I also appreciate how you throw in your belief system, because our beliefs really shape who we are. I agree with you, that everyone has a plan and is created in His image, so why try to alter it? I also think children are losing so much time outside and getting dirty, I see that with my nephew. I am younger than you, but all my siblings and I did play outside because we were so poor we did not have a computer or tablets or internet access, so we had to. But I definitely see the shift with my 4 year old nephew and it is sad. He is always crying at my mom's house because he cannot be on his iPad for dinner, dinner is only 30 minutes to an hour, it is not life altering to be off the iPad. You did a great job on your reflection.

  3. Great post Brandi! I enjoyed reading it. I agree that technology has come so far especially in the medical field. I think it is great but there are some things that I do not agree with like the article we read yesterday about altering a fetus. I have the same beliefs you do. I completely agree with you about how kids these days do not know how to talk to each other. I believe technology has everything to do with this. Living out in the country my kids go out and explore all the time. I am so thankful they have that.

  4. I agree with you Brandi. There are many pros and cons that come with technology. It is good to have, but at the same time sometimes it is overused. In the medical field, it is a great tool, but not when they go too far as to start wanting to alter fetuses. Like you said, everyone’s book is already written. There is no need to try to change it. I do not think that is right. I also hate that children spend so much time on devices now. I loved how you said that at dinner time you take away your kids devices and they know they already know they cannot use them. I think that is a great way for me to start with my kids so that I can hopefully get them to start doing the same thing.

  5. Kids certainly do need to be encouraged to do more outdoor activities. How will these kids know how to have meaningful relationships with people once they are older? How will they know that kindness and hatefulness have consequences since they will be hidden behind cellphone screens? Genetically engineered humans takes away free will! However, i also agree with you in regards to the lord having a plan for each and everyone of us, but on that same aspect there is a reason for everything that happens.

  6. I agree with you completely. Kids today do not know how to speak to one another in public. I see it everyday with kids that hangout with my siblings. They rather just send a text message because it is "easier" to them. I have also noticed that kids today do not know how to work hard because all they do is sit in their rooms and play video games or watch tv. They do not have to work for what they have.

  7. Love your reflection, Brandi! I have to agree, cell phones give us all too much availability sometimes. This becomes a distraction that we all know too well, missed chances at conversation or bonding with those around us. Many parents do often feel I think, where is the line for too little or too much technology with their children. We don't want to hinder their progress in this modern world but we hesitate t think about whats best and then forget the skills and lessons from the past that are still so valuable for us all to remember. We will have to all decide how to implement and use technology to the best of our ability as teachers while making sure it is still beneficial along the way.
